Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582), was a mystic and is pictured barefoot with Rosary. She belonged to the Discalced Carmelites who resided with their colonies in Spain and Portugal. She became sick in 1538 and cured miraculously in 1542, in 1616, she was canonized. Jesus appeared to her in 1556 with the mission to reform the Carmelite order, in 1562 she founded the monastery of St. Joseph in Avila.
The stylistic sleek style points to Goa.
1. Possible that Carmelites, who were also in India, had it made locally in the years after 1556 when Jesus’ appearance became known, or right after the canonization in 1616.
2. Possible that the Thomas Christians in South India had a figurine made of the popular Theresia between 1556 and 1620. They were a pre-colonial community founded by the apostle Thomas.
