Set of 55 prints from the series "The 53 Stations of the Tokaido" by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) (reprints) - Japan - ca. 1970-1980
Complete set of 55 woodblock prints from the work "The 53 Stations of the Tokaido" by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), first print between 1833 and 1834.
The set comprises 55 woodblock prints reprinted in 1970-1980 by the publisher Yu-yu-dou, with prints of the title, description and list of works, all printed on washi-paper, and stowed in maps, two prints per maps. The prints are of the same size as the regular horizontal oban size of the original Hoeido edition, each woodblock print is put, not glued, in one passepartout.
The Tokaido route connected Tokyo (Edo), the shogun's capital with Kyoto, the imperial capital, and was the most important road in ancient Japan. Along this route were 53 different "stations", which offered stables for the horses and food and shelter for the travellers.
Hiroshige created the series after his travels along the Tokaido route in 1832-1833. There are 55 prints in total, one for each station and one for the departure and arrival points.
