The ureilites are a rare type of stony meteorite that has a special mineralogical composition, very different from other stony meteorites . Scientists have discovered amino acids, life building bricks in a meteorite ureilite in 2008 TC3, what no one expected given the high temperatures affected during the explosion, about 1000 ° C1.
The ureilite could be defined as an olivine-pigeonite achondrite. Compared to most other meteorites, the ureilites tend to be high in carbon (an average of 3% in weight) in the shape of graphite and nanodiamants2. Diamonds, which are rarely more than a few micrometres in diameter, are probably the result of high-pressure shock waves produced by the collision of the body relative to the ureilites with other asteroids.
On thin slides prepared according to a technique known in geology, the researchers looked at samples of the meteorite by transmission electron microscopy. They have noticed diamonds of about 100 microns in diameter. The observation is not a surprise because small clusters of diamonds, of nanometric size, were seen since a long time in meteorites. However, diamonds are formed at high temperatures and pressures, which have usually nothing. On Earth, they are formed deep and in the interstellar environment, in the dusty clouds under the effect of the shock waves from supernovae explosions, but not only.
However, the ureilites could be pieces of other planets of the disappeared solar system! In this case, high pressure physics tells us that these diamonds are formed in the heart of a planet similar in mass and size to Mercury, or even just in the layers of the cloak enveloping the heart of a planet of the size of Mars.
