Wooden Mandalay Buddha (41 cm) - Myanmar/Burma - mid/2nd half 20th century
Beautiful antique gold-plated/coloured wooden Mandalay Buddha in Subduing Mara pose from the mid/second half 20th century, Burma. I managed to partially translate the text, and it means: 'Specially for New Year'.
Size: 41 x 33 x 23 cm. Weight: 4.8 kg.
Mandalay was seen as the centre of Buddhism and was nominated and declared as such by King Mindon. The location was chosen based on a prophecy uttered by Gautama Buddha, stating that a Buddhist metropolis would arise here the day of the 2400th anniversary of Buddhism. The political centre of this new city had the perfect geometrical shape of a Buddhist mandala, which led to the city's denomination of Mandalay.
The Mandalay Buddha is generally regarded as the Burmese interpretation of the Buddha. The Buddha statues have a youthful and cute face. The forehead has a wonderful decorated band. The head is covered with small curls of hair and is bound together on top. The Buddha wears a long royal robe (Uttarasanga). It is beautifully decorated with coloured pieces of glass and shows wonderful drapery and curled edges.
