Balzac & Gustave Doré - Les contes drolatiques - 1855
Balzac's Contes Drolatiques and the work of Gustave Doré are certainly too well-known to need much explanation. But a few words about this remarkable book are in order.
The first striking thing is its superb binding. This is by the renowned French binder Claude Honnelaître, whose work has been much exhibited and is the subject of several studies (including Maurice Houdayer's 1996 work "Reliures de Claude Honnelaître"). It is in gorgeous cherry calf with well-chosen marbled boards.
The second striking thing is the condition of the book. Unfortunately 19th century books tend to suffer from browning and foxing, and this can greatly affect the beauty and value of illustrated works. This edition of Balzac is as clean, bright and vibrant as could be wished for.
'Without doubt the best work ever done by Gustave Dore was that for the Contes Drolatiques,' declares a New York Times article of 24 January 1883, looking back on all of Gustave Dore's work.
Some details. This is the first edition of Balzac's work to be illustrated -- and much improved -- by Gustave Doré 425 illustrations, which are comical, satirical and sensual. The volume is an octavo (210 x 145 mm) of XXXI + 614 pages, as issued with title and half-title.
It is simply perfect: no stains, marks or signs of age or use. A wonderful example of Gustave Doré's work coupled to Balzac's more entertaining stories.
