Parma 8th July 1898-Parma 20th March 1985
He participated in the 1918 War Campaign. Enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Parma in
1922, obtained the license of the special courses with a diploma of merit and honourable mention (he had
as professors D. de Strobel and P. Baratta). From January 1925 to June 1940 he was in Paris. He won the
contest to fresco the castle of Chilly Mazarin. In 1926 worked in Lille, Roubaix,
Tourquoing, Saint Quintin, Amiens and Nancy. He worked for ten years with George De Bas as a
designer, poster designer and sketcher of scenes for theatre and magazines. In 1938 and 1939 he held
two personal exhibitions with the patronage of Fine Arts General Director Gillet and
Italian Ambassador Guariglia. ‘La mietitura’, on display in the exhibition at the Libreria Italia
it was chosen for the Jeu de Paume museum in Paris. Because of French-Italian hostilities
it didn’t obtain the confirmation. On the 11th June 1940 he was arrested, interned in a
concentration camp and then repatriated. In Italy he held several personal exhibitions, including those of
Como, Varese, Legnano and Verona, also participating in awards and group exhibitions.
In October 1975, Gherardi, after years of silence, held a personal anthological exhibition in the
Giordani gallery in Parma, an exhibition that was a true surprise for Parmesans: the
discovery of a painter famous for fifty years in many Italian cities and in Paris but not much
known in his hometown. Among his works we can mention: Ritratto di Raffaele
Gherardi’s painting is
accurate, rich in fantasy, characterised by a smooth and charming light, that
peculiar Emilian light also visible in works by Amedeo Bocchi and Carlo Corsi. His themes are classic:
mythology, post-impressionist landscape and portrait. Especially his stay in France
left a significant trace: Gherardi was a court painter, meticulous professional,
able to draw fine, timeless stories on huge canvases made on commission.
